Catholic Mass Booklets for Children: Learn about the Parts of Mass and Items Used at Mass

October 5, 2017 By Anne 4 Comments

Note:  If you are looking for a printable booklet on the parts of the Mass, go to the post “Come Celebrate! The Mass in Pictures.”

If you are looking for a printable booklet with items used at Mass and items found in a church, go to the post “I Found it! — Pictures and Names of Items Found in a Catholic Church.”

In Little Lambs year #3, we spend part of each class period learning something about the Mass and items used at Mass.  The first month of the year the children begin a Mass booklet:  foam board covers with pages that have pictures and names of items we learned about during class.  I also add in pictures of the parts of Mass that we talked about.

I encourage the children to take the booklets to Mass and find the items and parts of Mass that we talked about.

These booklets reinforce all month long what we covered in class.  They also help the children to be participants at Mass:  they are actively looking for what is on the pages of their books.

To make these booklets you need:

Covers:  You will need two covers for each booklet — 5 5/8” by 4 3/8”.  I cut covers from foam boards because I like how they make the booklets sturdy and they are easy to decorate.  Drawbacks are that you need to cut them with a roller cutter and you have to have a way to put holes in foam board.  Our parish has a big hole punch that works.  But my favorite way to put holes in foam board is to use a drill press (my husband has one in our garage).

You can also make covers from poster board.  Poster board is easier to cut and punch holes into.

The children use crayons to decorate their covers.  They also put their names on the covers just in case one is forgotten in church!

Pages:  Print the pages on white cardstock.  The pages are arranged for each lesson.

  • Lesson#1 Mass booklet pages
  • Lesson #2 Mass booklet pages
  • Lesson #3 Mass booklet pages
  • Lesson #4 Mass booklet pages
  • Lesson #5 Mass booklet pages
  • Lesson #6 Mass booklet pages
  • Lesson #8 Mass booklet pages

Update: Last year I was working with another parish and some of the items in their church looked very different from the ones I had pictures of. I made a new set of cards with pictures that reflect their church. I am calling them “pictures option #2”. Choose the ones that work best for you! (Note: Only the lessons that needed new pictures are listed below.)

  • Lesson #1 Mass booklet pages – pictures option #2
  • Lesson #3 Mass booklet pages – pictures option #2
  • Lesson #4 Mass booklet pages – pictures option #2
  • Lesson #5 Mass booklet pages – pictures option #2
  • Lesson #6 Mass booklet pages – pictures option #2

Cut apart the pages and punch holes in them (I do this before class).

Rings:  Use two 1-inch binder rings to hold the booklets (covers and pages) together.

Each month the children can add more pages to their booklet — and then they have new things to watch for during Mass!

If you are teaching about the Mass in a class, it is nice to have larger pictures to use with the entire class.  Here are larger pictures of the ones in the Mass booklets.

  • Large pictures for Lesson #1
  • Large pictures for Lesson #2
  • Large pictures for Lesson #3
  • Large pictures for Lesson #4
  • Large pictures for Lesson #5
  • Large pictures for Lesson #6

Pictures options #2 for the large pictures:

  • Large pictures for Lesson #3 – pictures option #2
  • Large pictures for Lesson #4 – pictures option #2
  • Large pictures for Lesson #5 – pictures option #2
