This fall is an exciting time for the Catholic Church in the United States. Fr. Stanley Rother was beatified on September 23rd and, on November 18th, Fr. Solanus Casey will be declared a blessed. Fr. Rother was the first U.S. born male to be declared blessed. Fr. Solanus will be the second.
I like reading about the people the Church declares a Blessed or a Saint. It is a great way to learn about our faith and how different people live it.
As I was searching for information about Fr. Solanus Casey, I discovered a site that has resources for teaching children about him. On this website there are 10 stories about Fr. Solanus Casey’s life. I really like the coloring pages (click on “view drawing”) and the text of each story with discussion questions (click on “download study guide”). These are perfect for reading to children. http://www.solanuscenter.org/extraordinary
For more about Fr. Solanus Casey, check out this article by Patrick Coffin. I especially like the part about “thanking God ahead of time” and how anxiety and fear can impede God’s plans for His children. http://www.ncregister.com/blog/patrickcoffin/father-solanus-casey-priest-prophet-and-porter
